PBA SOCCER PHILOSOPHY

"THE WINNER'S MANUAL"  |  PROGRAM PRINCIPLES

WE PLAY FOR A GREATER PURPOSE
“To everything there is a season, a time and a purpose under heaven” - Ecc 3:1

  • Every time we step on the field we not only represent generations of Sailfish footballers but we also understand that we ultimately represent Christ.
  • We portray Christ in our attitude and actions.
  • We are a class act on and off the field at all times.

WE PLAY TO A STANDARD
“If you’re judging where we are by the fact that we can afford to buy this house, it’s a dangerous measure. I judge where we are by how close I am to the melody I’m hearing in my head, and how close we are to what we can do as a band to realizing our potential.” - Bono

  • We play to the standard of perfection.
  • We will never be content with what we have accomplished or how we are playing at the moment.
  • There is always room for improvement.
  • We have a vision for what the game can look like and will constantly chase that vision.
  • We are in constant search for the perfect game (If we choose correctly, and execute, you can’t stop us).

TEAM OVER INDIVIDUAL
“For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” - Romans 12:4-6

  • We understand that each player has valuable gifts that fill in the gaps to comprise a team.
  • We understand that those gifts do not reach their full potential without equal dedication by all.
  • We understand that knowing our teammates strengths and weaknesses makes us better on the field and more valuable friends off the field.
  • We recognize that decisions that are made are always made for the betterment of the team as a whole and not for each individual circumstance or person.
  • We recognize that rarely will a decision be made for the team that pleases every single individual.
  • We fight against our self-centered tendencies and strive to put the team above our individual interests.
  • We value team success over individual recognition.

WE ARE INTENTIONAL IN OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH ONE ANOTHER
"For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." - Galatians 5:13-14

  • We make it a priority to spend time with our teammates of all nationalities and backgrounds.
  • We understand that we must invest in the lives of our teammates and allow them to invest in ours.
  • We seek to develop lifelong friendships with our teammates.
  • During FFF (forced family fun) we will HAVE FUN! Regardless of what we are doing!

WE ARE ALL BECOMING SERVANT LEADERS
“…Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be a slave of all. For even the son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." - Mark 10: 42- 45

  • To truly lead, one must first learn to serve.
  • Leadership is attitude then an action and then a position.
  • Every player is called to be a leader.
  • At the heart of it is an individual who is a servant first, who chooses to lead in order to better serve others.
  • A leadership model that emphasizes collaboration, trust, and empathy.

WE CHOOSE TO HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT  |  DON'T COMPLAIN OR WHINE
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you” - Philippians 4: 8-9

"The longer I love, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company...a church....a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude...I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you...we are in charge of our attitudes." - Charles Swindoll

  • We have a choice in how we respond to any given situation and what our attitude is.
  • We choose to see negative events as challenges and opportunities that help us grow and make us stronger.
  • We seek to encourage and pick up our teammates at all times.

MAKE IT YOUR GOAL TO LEAVE A LEGACY
"Our days are numbered. One of the primary goals in our lives should be to prepare for our last day. The legacy we leave is not just in our possessions, but in the quality of our lives. What preparations should we be making now? The greatest waste in all of our earth, which cannot be recycled or reclaimed, is our waste of the time that God has given us each day.” - Billy Graham

  • We seek to leave the program better than we found it.
  • We desire to make an impact on the program and the guys around us.
  • Everyone leaves some kind of legacy. What will you leave?

SEPARATE THE WAY YOU ACT FROM THE WAY YOU FEEL
"You can’t get much done in life if you only work on days when you feel good." - Jerry West

  • We understand that negative emotional reactions always hurt the team.
  • We do not let the way we feel dictate how we act.
  • We are expected to maintain our standard regardless of how we feel.
  • You can be tired; You can’t act tired.
  • You can be disappointed; You can’t wallow in self-pity.
  • We always show strength; Extremely disciplined.

WE SEEK TO SHARPEN & BE SHARPENED BY ONE ANOTHER
"As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." - Proverbs 27:17

  • We expect to be challenged while we are at our “whit’s end” while we are the most vulnerable.
  • We understand that challenges now will bring strength later.
  • We are willing to be honest with our teammates even if it’s a difficult topic or may cause discomfort.
  • We seek to support our teammate and push our teammates to stay on the right path.
  • We do not see being confronted by a teammate as an offensive situation but rather a desire for them to see us grow.
  • We resolve issues in a timely manner and do not sweep problems under the rug.

WE WORK HARD
"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” - Calvin Coolidge

  • We desire a culture that thrives on hard work and sees work as a privilege, not a punishment.
  • We train all summer so that we are constantly fit and prepared for a 5:00 minute mile, preseason, regular season, and post season.
  • We desire to work extremely hard on both sides of the ball at all times.
  • We train at an extremely high level of pace, work rate, and intensity.

WE ARE ALWAYS ASCENDING
“We are only beaten when we cease to believe what we can be.”

  • We understand that the toughest opponent that we will face this year is our-selves.
  • We always believe that we can get better.
  • We are never complacent in where we are as a team on or off the field.
  • We desire to improve with each touch of the ball every single day.
  • We never have it all figured out or can rest on past success.

WE ALWAYS FINISH STRONG
“It’s important to start well but it’s also very easy to start well. Just about everyone starts well. Very few people / groups ever finish with the same energy, commitment, and focus.”

  • We do our absolute best to finish everything we do stronger than we started whether that be a game, practice, run, semester,  class, or homework assignment.
  • We always want to score the last goal.
  • We never want to bleed into the finish.
  • We always have an extra “kick”.

WE CAN HANDLE ANYTHING!
“Concentration and mental toughness are the margins of victory.”
- Bill Russell

  • We show no weakness (Always ok, never appearing tired, walk tall / proud).
  • We stand up to our opponents physically, emotionally, and mentally.
  • We will outlast our opponents.
  • The Lindsey Wilson Story- “Tortoise and the Hair”.

WE BEHAVE LIKE WINNERS

  • We believe that winning is not only about results but also a mentality.
  • Win or lose we will carry ourselves with pride and class.
  • We expect to win and will walk with a sense of pride, confidence, and purpose (not cockiness or arrogance)…there is a difference.

TEAM EXPECTATIONS & STANDARDS  |  CONSTANTS IN PBA TRAINING

INTENSITY: Intensity is the basis that allows all other aspects of training to ring true. Intensity refers to a physical and mental desire to train at an incredibly high level.  Intensity also requires an extremely high level of discipline to set aside all distractions and focus solely on the task at hand.

  • We jog to and from every water break.

SPEED OF PLAY: Our speed of play can never be fast enough. We play too slow in too many areas and we must get faster at all times. Speed of play is one of the major factors that separates great teams from the rest. We have 100% control over areas that have nothing to do with our athletic ability.

  • Speed of Technical Preparation
  • Speed of Decision Making
  • Speed of Anticipation

TECHNICAL PRECISION: We constantly stress and must focus on our technical precision. How we handle the ball, and how technical we are individually directly influences how successful we are as a team. Our style of play demands accuracy, and a high technical ability so it is imperative that each and every guy continue to improve his technical proficiency.

TACTICAL DECISION MAKING: Better decisions create better results. Why we make every tactical option must be understood. We seek to only understand how to do the right thing but also WHY we do each thing.

CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT: We must always be uncomfortable when we train. Discomfort leads to improvement. Training should be harder than matches. Always ascending is a staple of our program. We believe that we truly can get better every time we step on the field. We never practice to waste time. Always an agenda, always a purpose.
